As I’ve said quite a few times now, the Suffolk music scene is absolutely bursting at the seams with talent. In my opinion one of the brightest lights among these talents is Folk Singer-Songwriter Tilly Dalglish.
Like all great lyricists, Tilly writes lyrics which are akin to poems and could be enjoyed as such. Her words are crammed with insight and commentary on everything from politics to the human condition. The fact that they are sung beautifully by Tilly when she puts them to music elevates them even further and makes for truly magical songs.
I was fortunate enough to be among the spell bound audience for her recent concept set ‘War In Words’ on The SoapBox Stage at Folk East a couple of weeks ago, which Tilly wrote and performed with the equally talented Singer-Songwriter Sam McKie. Tilly and Sam’s voices work fantastically together and their writing styles blend together to create moving and insightful music. Anna and I were delighted to have been among the lucky few who got hold of the hand made album which Tilly and Sam produced specifically for this event. I think there were only 16 of them made. However if it’s made available to download or if a second run of CDs is produced I strongly recommend you give it a listen. Or more specifically quite a few listens, because there is much to be discovered in the lyrics as well as to be experienced in the music. War In Words is well worth dedicating some serious time to.
I feel very privileged to have seen Tilly perform a few times now, and I’m excited to experience the music she will be creating in the future. Until then ‘War In Words’ will be a main stay on my iPod for some time to come.
Tilly is heading of to York soon, so if you’re Suffolk based check her out when you get the chance (She is performing at a fundraiser for Suffolk Mind at The John Peel Centre on November 26th) or if you’re Yorkshire based, keep an eye out as I’m sure Tilly will be lighting up your music scene soon too!
