I really believe that songwriters should write what they know. It’s important that they draw on their own experiences so that they can convey real feelings, emotions and life experiences through their music.
The last five or so years of my life have been very challenging indeed. I have been struggling with long term illness and my poor health as stolen so many of our dreams away (you can read more about that on my other blog here)
As a result, the real life experiences that I have been putting into song have often been dark ones*, so I made a really conscious effort to translate a positive experience into song. That’s what ‘The Best Day’ is all about.
It’s about the hope I still have, the hope that things can get better, that you never know when something amazing could happen and that with someone who loves you to walk the journey with you, you never know, today could be the best day of your life!
*e.g. ‘Open Letter to Lucifer’ or ‘We Are Each All Alone’
